TANZANIA NATIONAL PARKS PRESS RELEASE

 CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR TANAPA MEDIA AWARDS 2013
The Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) announces the 3rd TANAPA Media Awards for the best newspaper articles, radio or television programmes that create awareness as well as public involvement in the promotion of domestic tourism as well as conservation initiatives in the National Parks. The entries must have been published or broadcast between January 1st and December 31st, 2013. TANAPA Media Awards is an annual event which allows local journalists and media practitioners to showcase their competence in producing media content that educates the public on the importance of conservation of natural resources for current and future generations as well as the imperative of domestic tourism for the country’s well being.
Furthermore, TANAPA Media Awards is also a platform through which TANAPA recognises efforts by various media houses and individual journalists in consciously and consistently covering TANAPA’s efforts in promoting domestic tourism and in enhancing

conservation of natural resources, which include wildlife.
ELIGIBILITY FOR TANAPA MEDIA AWARDS 2013
The competition is open to all practicing journalists and media practitioners from newspapers, radio and television in the Tanzanian media. To qualify for the 2013 TANAPA Media Awards, all entries must have been published or broadcast in the period between January 1st and December 31st, 2013. Entries will be evaluated in their potential to capture audience interest and to stimulate desire to act on the theme in question. Generally, the criteria shall entail the quality of research/investigation, writing/narration, style, creativity, originality, clarity, logical flow, consistency, accuracy and balance.
TANAPA does not consider journalists or media practitioners if they have not sent entries as stipulated above.
HOW TO ENTER
Journalists can enter a maximum of three pieces of entries per category. Active website links for articles published online may be submitted by email while newspaper articles may be submitted electronically (PDF) or in hard copy.
Radio, Television clips may be submitted through CD/DVD.
CATEGORIES
There are two main thematic categories: Domestic Tourism and Conservation.
There are also three media sub-categories in each thematic category above: Newspapers, Radio and Television.
The awards therefore shall be issued in the following specific categories:
1. Domestic Tourism in the National Parks Award
The Domestic Tourism in the National Parks Award is given to the best article/programme or series of features or programmes that expose and promote touristic attractions found in the parks as well as encouraging Tanzanians and other residents to visit these God-given attractions.
(i) Newspapers (three awards: first, second and third)
(ii) Radio (three awards: first, second and third)
(iii) Television (three awards: first, second and third)
2. Conservation of National Parks Awards
(iv) Newspapers (three awards: first, second and third)
(v) Radio (three awards: first, second and third)
(vi) Television (three awards: first, second and third)
SUBMISSION FORMAT
Print: Minimum 1,000 and Maximum words 3,000
Email: Submit as MS Word of PDF attachment (or link in the web)
Post: Submit A4 print out; A4 or A3 photocopy; original newspaper cutting
Electronic: Submit as MP3, MP4, Flash disk, CD, DVD (Minimum 15 minutes and
Maximum 1 hour)
NOMINATION CRITERIA
The entries must meet both Technical Criteria and Professional Criteria
(a) Technical:

For radio and TV the entry should either be in-depth analysis or discussions.
For newspapers the article should be either in-depth news analysis or a feature.
Entrants must provide a summary of how they put together their work. The summary must explain the research methods, duration and motive or the work. Not more than 100 words.

Impact of article/programme

The criteria for best article / programme shall consider both criteria above as well as
the focus areas of the article which are:
Awareness creation
Educative
Mobilization
Critical
NB: TANAPA sponsored programmes should not participate in the competition
Deadline for submission of entries is January 31, 2014.
Only articles and radio/television programmes published/broadcast from January 1st,
2013 to December 31st, 2013 shall be considered for TANAPA Awards.
Judges shall select a maximum of 9 finalists from each of the two categories (i.e., Domestic
Tourism and Conservation) for final awards. Finalists shall be invited and required to attend
the Awards issuing ceremonies to be announced earlier.
PANEL OF JUDGES
TANAPA Media Awards has a panel of 5 distinguished individuals as judges who assess and
decide on eligible entries as well as winners. The panel comprises of three judges from the journalism profession and two from TANAPA, an expert in tourism and another in
conservation.
TANAPA MEDIA AWARD PRIZES
The prizes shall be distributed as follows:
(a) First winner: 2,000,000/-, a plaque, a certificate and study tour of a SADC country.
(b) Second winner: 1,500,000/-, a certificate, tour of two TANAPA Parks
(c) Third winner: 1,000,000/- and a certificate.
SUBMISSION DEADLINES
Entries must reach the TANAPA Headquarters by the 31st of January, 2014. Entries
submitted after this date shall automatically be disqualified.
