Ghana Prepares For 2013 Cannes Film Festival

The 66th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in France is two months away. This year’s event is scheduled for May 15 to May 26 and promises to be eventful. Currently, preparations are ongoing to make the world film festival historic. International films are still being submitted for consideration just as patrons’ accreditations for the event are being worked on.

Ghana Movie Awards are also preparing to attend the ceremony, which parades the best of the world’s acclaimed superstars and filmmakers every year.

A matter of concern to Ghanaian critics is whether Ghana would submit a film this year unlike the previous two years when it only paraded actors at the event.

Cannes was created on the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, who was keen to establish an international cultural event in France to rival the Venice Film Festival.

The first edition of the festival was originally set to be held in Cannes in 1939 under the presidency of Louis Lumière. However, it was not until over a year after the war ended that it finally took place, on 20 September 1946. It was subsequently held every September - except in 1948 and 1950- and then every May from 1952 onwards.

Over the years, the festival has been tagged as one of the most celebrated film festivals which come off as an award ceremony as well.
