In connecting with people and explaining about our new ministry to Angola, many great questions have been raised concerning this new service opportunity. Let me help address some of them.
1. How is it that you, missionaries with an aviation mission (Mission Aviation Fellowship), will now become involved with a medical ministry? As time moves on, more and more ministries who perform very distinct and unrelated ministry activities are now working more closely together to share their resources. This is the case with MAF in Angola, who partner in ministry with the CEML Hospital. Having served many years previously in Angola with MAF and now being involved in more administrative roles, Mark seemed well suited to assist CEML in their need of administrative assistance.
2. What is the political and security situation now in Angola? In its history, Angola unfortunately suffered through a 30 civil war over tribal and political disputes. Since the conflict's conclusion in 2002, democratic elections have occured but one main party holds a monopoly on political power. Overall security situation has improved markedly allowing free and safe road travel which was not at all possible during the war. Because of the extent of poverty, crime and personal security is mostly a concern in the large cities; this should not be a problem for us.
3. Will Mark be involved in flying again there in Angola? Though I keep my flying licences current, I will not be involved again in flying the MAF aircraft. Besides managing the hospital, I will be more involved in helping to develop a medivac / flying doctor service through the Hospital with the MAF aviation services. Am I disappointed that I will not be involved in regular flying there? Not really, I love new challenges and for me there are unique thrills and rewards that come from flying a desk!
